ABOUT GORDONS BAY
A little seaside village on the edge of False Bay
Gordon's bay is an exclusive, yet quaint, coastal village nestled at the foot of the Hottentots Holland Mountains, along the False Bay Coast. and a mere 50 kilometres from Cape Town.
Gordon’s Bay boasts two harbours with launching facilities, and offers great sport for rock anglers, fishermen and deep sea divers.
One is the original working harbour, which is still used for fishing and maintenance of boats and yachts. It is also home to the Gordons Bay Yacht Club, National Sea Rescue Institute and the SA Navy.
The new Harbour is situated in Harbour Island and is home to many charter boats and yachts. This harbour is also home to the Gordons Bay Boat Angling Club.
Both harbours have a variety of very colourful and interesting restaurants and pubs.
The beautiful stretches of white sand beaches are also well known for the extremely safe swimming and secluded beach areas.
Gordons Bay has some of the best beaches in the Cape with rock pools, shallow paddling areas and calm seas. Being the start of the Southern / East coast, the water temperature of the sea is much warmer than you will find on the Atlantic coast.
Bikini Beach, our most popular beach, has been awarded Blue Flag status, an international quality rating of the highest order.
The village of Gordon’s Bay is also a mecca of entertainment with Restaurants offering a variety of excellent cuisine and traditional pubs.
Based in the Helderberg region, you can explore the best of the Cape Winelands (Somerset West, Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek) a short distance away.
Further south, you can experience the beachside resorts of Rooi Els, Pringle and Betty’s bay, Kleinmond and of course, the whale spotting mecca, Hermanus.
The climate is Mediterranean; average maximum temperatures peak at 35 degrees Celcius from December to March. Summers are warm and dry, with some wind. Spring and Autumn have mild and balmy days. Winters tend to be moderate, but chilly in the evenings. Snow can often be seen on the Helderberg Mountains.
Gordon's Bay is always popular with rock and surf anglers, and the Gordon's Bay Harbour is completely sheltered to allow safe passage for fishing boats, yachts and power boats in almost all weather conditions. There are great angling possibilities in the area of Gordon's Bay itself, or one can venture further afield to the rich tuna and marlin fishing grounds of Cape Point. A favourite spot for rock anglers to cast their lines is at the Steenbras River mouth. Perhaps the most convenient angling spot of all is the quay wall of one of the small bays where one can settle down in a deck chair for the day with a picnic hamper close at hand.
Gordon's Bay and surrounds is a sport paradise for the whole family. The safe waters are ideal for swimming, surfing and windsurfing.
Gordon's Bay combines the international feeling of a modern and stylish holiday resort with the charm of a simple seaside village. One can admire the many examples of the very latest styles in architecture or one can explore the older parts of town and discover winding lanes with tucked-away shops and quaint cottages dating from the turn of the century.
Gordon's Bay is a convenient point of departure for exploring the Boland. Many places of interest are within easy reach. It is only 45 minutes from Cape Town and 20 minutes from Cape Town International Airport. The proximity of Gordon's Bay to the fruit and wine producing regions of Elgin, Grabouw, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Somerset West and Franchoek is convenient and brings the popular wine routs of Cape Town within easy reach.
